SMARTSOLO USED FOR SHALLOW 3D STRUCTURE DETECTION IN GBA

Recently, 1385 stations of SmartSolo IGU-16HR 3C seismic sensorwere used for a Shallow 3D Structure Detection project (Phase 1) in the Greater Bay Area of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau. This key data acquisition is for the construction of Guangdong’s pilot province for earthquake prevention and mitigation modernization. The aim is to explore 3D velocity structures in 2km of subsurface for three main urban areas of GBA. The project will provide essential safety support in the entire Great Bay Area, assuring better detection and understanding of urban active faults. It will enable improvements to infrastructure planning while enhancing natural disaster prevention and control for sustainable urban development.

SmartSolo IGU-16HR 3C three-component smart seismic sensors are ideal for urban shallow geological and engineering exploration, geohazard surveying, and active fault detection. Applications of the IGU-16HR 3C also include volcanic research, landslide monitoring, ambient noise observation, and many other active or passive seismic recording activities. Large-scale deployments of three-component seismometers can certainly provide more comprehensive evidence for urban infrastructure planning and safe and sustainable growth.

The Guangdong – Hong Kong – Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA) has a total population of approximately 71.2 million people (5% of China’s total population). It includes nine mega cities of Guangdong province as well as two special administrative regions, Hong Kong and Macau. Surrounding the Pearl River Delta, covering 56,000 km2 (the area of Croatia), it is the largest and richest economic region in South China. As the most populated urban expanse, GBA is among the 5 largest bay areas in the world, with London, New York, San Francisco, and Tokyo.
